The little claws or prongs as they are often called, that hold the stones in place can become worn or broken which, if not repaired, can result in the stone falling out and becoming lost. When we repair this it is known as re-tipping.
A little tip I often offer to check if your claws are damaged or sharp is to rub the ring against the back of your hand to see if it scratches. If it does it needs attention.
